One of the best ways of exploring a country you have just arrived in as an expat or as a tourist is through touring wineries. Before leaving Serbia, I realized that I have to get going with something I had been wanting to do for too long – to get to know Serbia through its wineries. Drinking wine is enjoyable with someone though, so I asked a recent acquaintance to come along on the journey. Hilde and I ended up forming a friendship while traveling through Serbia and talking about wine and life. In the end, it turned out to be a wonderful way to make friends as well! After only 7 visits, I feel like I have known Serbia and Hilde for many years. That’s probably the effect of the wine. But, most likely, it’s the effect of being ‘in the same boat’ – learning about a new place with the same goal together.
